How to check and compare your public IP address

Start with the automatic lookup, then use the IPv4 and IPv6 probes when you are checking a VPN, proxy, or dual-stack connection. A public IP identifies an internet route—not a person or exact address.

How to use the result

  1. Record the current IP, address family, ASN, network, country, and timezone.
  2. Connect or change the VPN or proxy in the browser you are testing.
  3. Run the check again and compare IPv4 and IPv6 separately.

What it means

A changed public address usually means that address family took a different route. An unchanged IPv4 or IPv6 address deserves review, but split tunneling, browser-only proxy settings, and provider behavior can all affect the result.

Important limits

  • Geolocation is database-based and approximate.
  • One browser result does not prove every app uses the same route.
  • This check does not test DNS or WebRTC by itself.

Common questions

Can an IP lookup show my home address?

No. It can show approximate network and location context, but not a reliable street address or the identity of the person using the route.

Why do IPv4 and IPv6 show different results?

They are separate address families and can follow different routes. Compare each family independently when testing a VPN or proxy.
