Online Webcam Test

Camera and microphone diagnostics

Test the permission, device, live signal, and local sample separately

A successful browser-media test requires more than one permission prompt. The browser must be allowed by the operating system, the site must be allowed by the browser, the intended device must be available, and the live track must produce useful video or audio.

01

Permission

Use HTTPS and grant only the camera or microphone access needed for the test.

02

Device

Refresh the list after permission and select the intended webcam or audio input.

03

Live signal

Confirm a visible camera preview or a microphone level that reacts to normal speech.

04

Local sample

Create a local picture or short audio recording and review the actual output.

Recommended workflow

How to run a clean browser test

  1. Close competing apps. Leave calls and close camera, recording, streaming, and virtual-device tools.
  2. Test one input first. Start the camera or microphone independently so the other device cannot hide the result.
  3. Allow the site. Approve the browser prompt for the selected device and confirm Windows or macOS also allows the browser.
  4. Select the correct device. Refresh the device list after permission when labels were hidden.
  5. Review the live result. Check preview, framing, focus, microphone level, noise floor, and selected input.
  6. Create a local sample. Capture a picture or short audio clip and inspect it before using the device in a call or recording.

Permission layers

Why Allow in the browser may not be enough

Secure page

Camera and microphone access requires a secure context such as HTTPS or localhost.

Site permission

The current origin must be allowed to use the selected device.

Browser setting

The browser must allow sites to ask and must not be locked by managed policy.

Operating system

Windows or macOS must allow the browser application to access camera or microphone hardware.

FAQ

Webcam and microphone questions

Is my webcam video or microphone audio uploaded?

No. The live camera and microphone streams stay in the browser. A picture or audio sample leaves the page only when you choose to download the local file.

Can I test the camera and microphone separately?

Yes. You can start or stop the camera and microphone independently, so one test can continue when the other device is unavailable or permission is denied.

Why are device names missing before I allow access?

Browsers can hide non-default devices and return empty labels until a media stream is active or persistent permission exists. This reduces hardware exposure without consent.

Why is my webcam preview black?

Check the physical shutter, lighting, selected camera, competing apps, operating-system privacy, site permission, virtual-camera source, and whether the browser can restart the video track.

Why does the microphone meter not move?

Check hardware mute, the selected input, operating-system input level, browser and site permission, Bluetooth or USB connection, and whether another application or virtual audio device controls the input.

Can I take a picture or record audio?

Yes. The app can create a local PNG picture and, when the browser supports MediaRecorder, a short local audio sample that you can play, download, or clear.
